Rootikal first opened its doors at London’s East Village in
December 2008 and continues to mix up the best in
contemporary and revival roots reggae.
The promoters and resident selectors are David Hill, Stuart Patterson
and Mr Faso, who are joined by regular guests including David Rodigan,
Mikey Dread & Ras Kayleb of London’s Channel One, Aba Shanti I,
Ashley Beedle and Nick Mansseh. Over the years Rootikal has also
hosted some of reggae’s finest veteran vocalists including Al Campbell,
Linval Thompson, Michael Prophet and Cornel Campbell.
The Rootikal crew have a diverse musical background - David
from the Ballistic Brothers (with Ashley Beedle) and then the
Nuphonic record label, Stuart as a House DJ and founder of Faith,
and Mr Faso, the Italian youngblood. Together they bring their
unique take on reggae music in the 21st century.
In 2011 Island Records gave David Hill and Ashley Beedle access to the Tuff Gong studio masters of some classic Bob Marley and the Wailers tracks, allowing them to produce their own mixes. So far they've reworked 'Get Up Stand Up' and 'Natural Mystic', with the mixes being championed by the likes of David Rodigan.
More recently they’ve remixed ‘Pompous Way’, a song taken from a newly recorded album by Bristolian originals Black Roots. The Rootikal 'Humble Yourself version' features a melodica solo from Darren Morris and heavy plate-reverb dubwise section.
2012 also saw the first of the Rootikal Selection 45s for the Roots label - a series where Rootikal’s David Hill has selected rare or unreleased tracks from the Jah Thomas catalogue, refixing the versions with edits and overdubs. Initial releases feature Johnny Osbourne, Junior Keating, Roots Radics, Singie Singie and Matic Horns. Watch this space, there are lots more productions on the way....
Rootikal were also invited to host a stage at the Strummer of Love festival in August 2012. An intimate festival set in the rolling countryside of the Black Down Hills in Somerset, it marked the 10th anniversary of of the passing of Joe Strummer, front-man of The Clash. The Rootikal stage saw great live shows from Joshua Moses, Roots Manuva,Talisman, Matic Horns and Holly Cook, with selectors David Rodigan, Channel One and Nick Manasseh all taking the roof off the tent for a truly memorable close to the three day festival.
The Rootikal selectors continue to spread their musical message - conscious reggae for rootikal people.
